Frequently asked questions

What is NORPROLAC?

NORPROLAC (quinagolide hydrochloride) is a medication used for the treatment of elevated levels of the hormone prolactin (hyperprolactinaemia). NORPROLAC is provided in tablet form for oral administration. For more information, please see full product information for NORPROLAC: Product information - 150 µg dose and Product information - 25, 50 and 75 µg dose.

What is hyperprolactinaemia?

Hyperprolactinaemia is a common medical condition that occurs when excessive amounts of the hormone prolactin are secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. Hyperprolactinaemia mostly affects young (premenopausal) women, but can also occur in men. Benign growths called prolactinomas in the pituitary gland are the most common cause of hyperprolactinaemia.

What does prolactin normally do?

Prolactin is a hormone which plays an essential role in the normal production of breast milk after childbirth.

How does NORPROLAC work?

The secretion of prolactin is reduced by a substance, a neurotransmitter, called dopamine which acts on prolactin-secreting cells in an area of the brain called the pituitary gland. NORPROLAC mimics the action of dopamine in the pituitary to reduce prolactin levels.

Has NORPROLAC been shown to be effective?

In clinical trials in premenopausal women, NORPROLAC has been shown to effectively normalize prolactin levels, reduce the size of prolactin-secreting pituitary growths and restore fertility and regular menstrual cycles.

What problems can hyperprolactinaemia cause?

Hyperprolactinaemia can reduce the function of the reproductive organs (known as hypogonadism), which leads to reduced menstruation or a complete absence of normal menstruation in women and ultimately to infertility (in both women and men). In addition, it can lead to reduced libido, osteoporosis, impotence and increased production of breast milk (known as galactorrhoea).

How will I know if I have hyperprolactinaemia?

If you have symptoms that indicate hyperprolactinaemia your doctor will take a detailed medical history from you and carry out a clinical examination. A blood sample will also be taken for biochemical tests (including measurement of prolactin levels, a pregnancy test, renal and thyroid function tests). If you have elevated levels of prolactin your doctor may also request imaging of your pituitary gland to determine whether an abnormality is present.

How often do I have to take NORPROLAC?

Once-daily at bedtime with some food.

Who is NORPROLAC for?

Male and female patients with hyperprolactinaemia.

Who should not take NORPROLAC?

Children, elderly patients and pregnant women should not take NORPROLAC.

Can I take NORPROLAC if I am pregnant?

NORPROLAC should not be taken during pregnancy, but can be taken in female patients wishing to conceive up until the point that pregnancy is confirmed.

What is the NORPROLAC starter pack?

Treatment with NORPROLAC may be initiated gradually with a starter pack that includes a starting dose of 25 µg/day at bedtime for the first 3 days, followed by 50 µg/day for a further 3 days. From day 7 onwards, the recommended dose is 75 µg/day. The dose of NORPROLAC that you take will be determined by your physician and you should always follow your physician’s instructions regarding your medication.
